Here’s a memory I post each year around Halloween. It’s not meant to be scary. It does involve a ghost which Elvis believed lives at Graceland, and so do I.
Here’s a memory from 1960. One night Vernon and I were watching the Late, Late Show on the TV, in the kitchen at Graceland. As we were watching the movie, I thought I heard footsteps upstairs. It was strange because Elvis wasn’t there, he was making a movie at the time. I asked Vernon, did you hear that. He said, no. I didn’t say anything and continued watching the movie.
I heard the footsteps again, I asked Vernon again, did you hear that? He looked at me and asked, what did you hear. I said, it sounds like someone is upstairs, I can hear them walking around. He said, no I didn’t hear anything. We continued watching the movie.
A few minutes later I heard them again, this time Vernon heard it to. He turned the TV off and said, it’s time for bed. It left me a little confused, because of his reaction, but I didn’t question him. A month or so later, Elvis came home. My brothers and I were playing with him in the backyard, when we got tired, we took a seat and talked. He asked how things were when he wasn’t home.
That’s when I told him what had happened that night. He looked at me and smiled, then said, let me show y’ all something. He put David on his shoulders, and took me and Rick by the hands, and we walked into the house. We went upstairs, he took us to the attic.
We had never been in the attic before. When we walked in we saw an old electric train, and a lot of old clothes and Elvis’s army footlocker. Elvis took David off his shoulders, and we walked over to the train. He said, my Mom bought this for me when I first started making a lot of money, she knew I always wanted one when I was young. We looked at the train set for a moment then we walked over to the footlocker. Elvis said, this was from my army days. He opened it up and showed us his army clothes.
Then we walked over to the old clothes. He said, these are my Momma’s clothes, I couldn’t stand the thought of giving them away, so I kept them. Then he said, what you heard that night Billy was my Momma. He continued, ghosts aren’t like what you see in movies, sometimes they come back to watch over you and warn you of the dangers ahead. My brothers and I looked at each other and then looked at Elvis, we didn’t know what to say. Elvis sensed that and said, never be afraid, my Momma would never do anything to harm you, she was only watching over you, like she does me. After he said that, we all smiled. Throughout the years at Graceland, we all heard strange noises and footsteps, but took comfort in what Elvis had told us, and we were never scared when we heard the sounds. Because we knew who it was and what she was doing.
