Janelle McComb was a long time dear friend of the Presley family. She knew Elvis, his mother Gladys & his father Vernon since Elvis was a little boy and lived in Tupelo, Mississippi. Janelle met the Presleys through going to the same Church. Many years later in late 1971, Janelle was visiting Elvis at Graceland and as she was leaving she saw little Lisa and asked Elvis, it will soon be little Lisa’s birthday, what do you plan on giving her? Elvis replied that he wanted to give her something that was priceless and from his heart and at the same time teach her values. Without hesitation, Janelle, who was somewhat of a poet, asked Elvis if he would like her to write a poem that he could give to Lisa for her fourth birthday in February. Without hesitation, Elvis said yes. Months later Janelle returned to Graceland and presented Elvis with the poem she had written which was titled ‘The Priceless Gift’. Elvis took it upstairs and read it. Moments later he came back downstairs in tears and thanked Janelle for writing such a beautiful poem. Elvis gifted Lisa with this poem on her fourth birthday on February 1, 1972. A little over 5 years later, after Elvis passed away, Elvis’s father Vernon asked Janelle if she would write the epitaph for Elvis’s gravestone and so she did. Not long after that Janelle was approached by a few of Elvis’s friends and family members including Jerry Schilling and Joe Esposito and they told her they were all chipping in to buy Elvis an eternal flame which would be placed at the head of his gravestone and would love if she would write a small saying for the eternal flame and so Janelle happily agreed to. For many years up until her passing in 2005, Janelle remained a very close and dear friend to the Presleys and became very close to Lisa Marie as well as they always stayed in touch. I hope that whoever reads this story and visits Meditation Garden at Graceland and reads the epitaph on Elvis’s gravestone and eternal flame will now know who wrote these beautiful words and they will also know how much Janelle McComb meant to the entire Presley family. Thank you Janelle for all of your priceless gifts to the Presley family. May you rest peacefully.
