In 1960, Judy Fowler got the experience of a lifetime.
She won a contest to meet Elvis Presley on the set of his film GI Blues.
Judy had heard of a contest with Photoplay Magazine, where you wrote Elvis a note and sealed with a kiss. If you won, you got a personal visit with him.
Judy wrote her note and then sealed it with a kiss using her best lipstick. At dinner, she told her mother she entered the contest but didn’t ever expect to win.
However, one Saturday, completely out of the blue, the doorbell rang, and she had a special delivery from the postman. When she saw the envelope printed from Photoplay magazine, she excitedly ripped the envelope open with shaky hands and got weak in the knees. She skimmed the words and began to shake all over she won the contest!
She and her mother were flown to Hollywood and were taken to the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The next day was to be the big day. The next day, they were driven to Paramount Studios and brought on to the closed set.
When she looked around, she saw a bunch of soldiers standing round and was surprised when she realized one of them was Elvis Presley.
She was told that as soon as they were finished filming this scene, she would get to meet Elvis. After the scene was over, Elvis walked over to her smiling and before she could even say or do anything, he softly said he was very glad to meet her and invited her into his dressing room so they could talk. Unable to speak, she just nodded her head. Elvis looked at her mom and asked if she knew how to speak or smile? He laughed at his own joke. He put his arm around her and led her and her mom into his dressing room. He was very polite and asked questions about her and her life. He tried hard to put her at ease and kept trying to get her to talk, but her nerves kept her from saying very much. He spent a while talking with her, and she was able to get photos with him. She wanted to ask him for a kiss and started to once or twice but never got the courage to ask. She spent some time watching him filming in set.
The last time she saw him, he was standing with a group of men, and he called to her and waved, telling her bye.
This would go down as the best day of Judy’s life.
